Riot has confirmed in a recent Dev Diary video that its upcoming League of Legends fighter currently named Project L will be free to play and “respectful of both your time and wallet”.
While not much of a surprise, considering Riot’s multiplayer games are free to play, Senior Director Tom Cannon did feel the need to confirm Project L will be too.
“You will be able to play no matter where you live, what your skill level is, or how much money you have to spend on a game. To that, I’m happy to confirm that Project L will be free-to-play”
He even hinted at monetization, but not enough for us to know for sure whether project L will be completely F2P friendly, like all other Riot games, or a little pay to win.
“When it comes to monetization, we promise to be respectful of both your time and your wallet”.
Project L being a traditional fighting game, and a triple A one by the look of it, it begs the question of how F2P it will be. There aren’t any F2P-friendly titles among AAA traditional fighters currently on the market (like Street Fighter, Tekken, Mortal Kombat among many others). Most are paid games and/or block extra characters behind a pay wall.
That said, we can safely predict that Project L will be cosmetics intensive (lots of skins to purchase), and not pay to win (with characters being earned for the most part by playing).
