After a long and uncertain wait, riddled with unconfirmed gossips and leaks (which appeared to be true after all), Warzone, the battle royale mode based on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has officially been announced by Activision and will be launching today as a free-to-play standalone on PC, PS4 & Xbox One simultaneously.
Launching with Two Game Modes
At launch, players will be able to squad up in trios with friends or randomly selected players across two game modes: Battle Royale and Plunder.
BATTLE ROYALE: Drop into a 150-player firefight to be the last squad standing while escaping the deadly gas in the swiftly closing circle.
PLUNDER: Race to deposit the most Cash in this all-new game mode, taking down enemies to steal their Cash, and completing in-match Contracts.
It thus appears that no solo or duo queues will be available at launch.
Unique BR Gameplay Features
Warzone is advertized as a game-changer packed with non-stop and endless action, and based on the following key gameplay features:
EARN CASH. LOOT CASH. SPEND CASH.: Find supply boxes to purchase in-match Equipment, Field Upgrades, Killstreaks and more.
GAIN THE ADVANTAGE WITH CONTRACTS: Completing contracts gives you instant in-match rewards including loot, Cash, XP and more
GET BACK INTO THE FIGHT: Earn your respawn by winning a 1v1 match in the Gulag.
While these features don’t appear to be that revolutionary (like fighting for cash), there are some original aspects, such as the 1v1 match to earn your right to re-spawn in battle (only in BR mode).
New, But Familiar Map
The new map combines new and fan-favorite Call of Duty locations. Verdansk is a large city area with multiple named zones and over 300 points of interest. Each zone features distinct landmarks like the Gorengard Lumber Yard or the Gora Dam, located across different environment types like cities and rural areas.
Release Places & Times
Warzone will be live today, Tuesday, March 10 at 8AM PDT (4PM CET) as a one-time early access for Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® owners, and will launch a few hours later at around 12PM PDT (8PM CET) for everyone else.
You do not need to own the full version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to download, play and enjoy Warzone. You only need to wait 4 more hours until the standalone version is released on PS4, Xbox One and PC (via Battle.net).
